What’s the Difference Between A Sunroom and A Patio Enclosure?

Many are confused about the differences in a sunroom versus a patio enclosure. That’s because in some cases the two can be one and the same. While in some cases they may pertain to two very different structures.

On this article, let’s sort things out their differences and understand the basics.

What is a Sunroom?

A sunroom is normally built either an existing patio with no existing roofing system or over an existing deck. It can be a completely new structure that is simply a room with abundant natural light and access to the outdoors. Sunrooms have many names and to name a few:

  • Screen Room
  • Sunspace
  • Acrylic Room
  • Three-Season Room
  • Four-Season Room
  • Solarium

Just keep in mind that a three-season room is not insulated for winter weather. It is not designed to be heated and cooled but a three-season room is definitely a space designed for pleasure and tranquility.

If you are looking for a room that you can use for a year-round whatever the climate is, go for a four-season room. A four-season room is engineered to be heated and cooled which is very functional every day of the year. Another type of four-season room is a solarium where the walls and the roof are all made of glass.

Similar to screen rooms, a sunroom, sunspace, solarium or whatever you may call it is ideal for relaxing or doing your activities while enjoying nature, no matter the outside temperature or time of day.

Sunrooms can be fitted to allow electrical and plumbing access. You can easily install a ceiling fan or outdoor sink. Another benefit is the fact that when you install this structure, your home looks bigger and more appealing from the outside.

What is a Patio Enclosure?

A patio enclosure frequently refers to a room built over a patio with an existing roofing system already in place. No need to build or reinforce foundations as long as the patio is determined to be sufficient for the room. The patio enclosure can be made of poured concrete, pavers, bricks, or some other material intended to provide a flat, stable foundation.

One of the most common features of patio enclosures is enclosed spaces featuring high-quality mesh fiberglass screening. This allows you to enjoy a gentle breeze without being subject to dirt, debris, bugs, or other irritants. A patio enclosure also provides an ideal space as a home office, exercise area, guest accommodations, social entertaining spot, and many other functions where kids can play, small animals can enjoy some fresh air, and everyone can relax and unwind in comfort.

So what is the difference between the two? Perhaps not much of a difference. They may vary in terms of the foundation of the structure but both still serve the same purpose. Both the sunroom and patio enclosure provides convenience and comfort to everyone. You can enjoy staying outdoors at any time of the day and any season of the year. Most of all, you can stop worrying about the threat of insects bites while enjoying meals or gathering with family and friends.
